Coffs Coast Armizare is a Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) group practicing medieval combat according to the teachings of Italian fencing master, Fiore de’i Liberi. Look at the Fight Like Fiore project to read a translation and explanations of his writings.
We study and practice Armizare – a comprehensive 15th century combat system. The aim of the class is to emphasise the martial efficacy and historical accuracy of our techniques.
What do we cover in class?
Longsword– The longsword is a large two handed sword developed during the 14th century. It is the most popular HEMA weapon that people train and compete with.
Dagger – The dagger used is a rondel dagger. This has a long, almost edgeless blade specifically designed to punch through armour.
Grappling – Grappling and wrestling forms a foundation of much of what occurs throughout armizare. In many ways, armizare can be thought of as grappling with weapons.
Spear – The spear is a relatively simple weapon. Within armizare it is fairly short and designed for use in the context of a duel.
Pollaxe – The pollaxe appeared in the mid 14th century as a weapon designed for use specifically in and against armour on foot. It is a form of pole arm with a conglomerate head of a large spike and a hammer head extending out from the base of a spear point.
